MBZUAI Receives $1M from Google.org for MENA AI Research

News for the MENA AI ecosystem! 🚀 We are excited to share that MBZUAI (Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence) got a $1 million support from Google.org.   With this funding from Google.org, MBZUAI’s Vice Provost Thamar Solorio will lead an effort to help speakers of underrepresented languages across the Middle East and North Africa, ensuring the local community is able to benefit from AI. Why does this matter? Most AI today is trained on English-centric data. This initiative focuses on creating a local research system that understands the diverse dialects and rich cultural contexts of our region. This collaboration will: ✅ Help researchers develop “resource-lean” sophisticated AI tools. ✅ Support early-career researchers and postdoctoral talent. ✅ Enhance real-world applications in education, cultural preservation and digital communication. As Yossi Matias, Google VP and the Head of Google Research noted, this work aims to solve practical problems through science and shows progress on the MENA AI Opportunity Initiative. Join us in congratulating the MBZUAI team on this incredible achievement! 👏 #AIforGood #MENA #MBZUAI #GoogleAI
