🚚 Delivering resources to journalists requires meeting them where they are. In partnership with the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) and Daily Maverick, a mobile classroom brought business support and AI tools to community newsrooms across South Africa. This pilot program ensures publishers receive the training they need in their local languages. 📄 Investigative journalism often involves sifting through mountains of paper to find a single lead. For the team at Italian outlet Slow News, telling a complex historical story meant analyzing thousands of pages from court records, libraries, and newspaper archives. To manage this volume of information, Editor-in-Chief Alberto Puliafito used Pinpoint, a tool powered by Google Search and AI. The team digitized roughly 1,500 documents, using optical character recognition to make the text searchable and speech-to-text technology to transcribe interviews. This efficiency allowed the team to focus on the narrative rather than the manual sorting. The result was "10 and 25," a podcast series that won the award for best independent information podcast. As Puliafito explains, using these tools allows journalists to spend less time organizing data and more time on the human element of their reporting. News leaders gathered in London this week for the News in the Digital Age summit. Hosted in partnership with FT Strategies, the event explored the practical realities of AI in journalism. The agenda moved past theory into action. We saw how The National News is using flexible formats to serve readers better and how the Financial Times is pushing the boundaries of data visualization. Panels covered everything from revenue diversification to the rise of independent creators. The takeaway was clear: while tools change, the core mission of journalism remains the same. AI offers new ways to work efficiently, but trust and human judgment are still our most valuable assets. Thank you to all the speakers and attendees who contributed to these vital conversations! When 40 journalists left a major Slovak newspaper to launch an independent outlet in 2014, they faced a challenge familiar to many in our industry. They needed to sustain quality journalism without relying on clickbait or ad revenue alone. Finding that existing market tools were not built for subscription-first models, the team at Denník N decided to build their own. The result was the Readers’ Engagement and Monetization Platform (REMP), an open-source solution developed with support from the Google News Initiative. By pooling resources, they created a tool that allows publishers to compete on the quality of their reporting rather than their tech stack. Today, REMP is used by newsrooms across Europe, Africa, and Asia, generating more than €40 million in reader revenue for partners worldwide.
